Lifeguard Training

This American Red Cross course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illness until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel arrive and take over. Pre-requisites are held two weeks prior to the start of the course and completing the online learning is required prior to the start of the first class: Participants must be 15 years old and pass the pre-course of: 

  1. 300-yard swim using front crawl and breaststroke,
  2. Swim 20 yards, surface dive 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, swim 20 yards back to starting point and exit the water, 
  3. Tread water with hands out of the water for 2 minutes. 

Certification includes Lifeguard Training/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Lifeguards Training

Water Safety Instructor

This American Red Cross course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses in the Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, conduct training sessions and evaluate participants’ progress. Participants must be 16 years old and will gain certification as a Water Safety Instructor. This course authorizes instructors to teach swimming lessons from the Learn-to-Swim Program Levels 1 to 6, Basic Water Rescue, water safety outreach presentations, and Parent & Child Aquatics. Pre-requisites are held two weeks prior to the start of the course and completing the online learning is required prior to the start of the first class.

Lifeguarding Instructor

This American Red Cross course trains instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Attendant, Lifeguard Management, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission, and Basic Water Rescue courses. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Water Safety Presentations, Waterfront Lifeguarding, and Waterpark lifeguarding. Participants must be 17 years old and upon successful completion.

Lifeguarding Instructor Review Course

The purpose of this course is to practice, improve and polish skills to ensure instructors and instructor trainers can perform the skills as well as be able to recognize correct and incorrect skill performance. This course ensures consistency of Red Cross program skills and knowledge across the instructors and instructor trainers through feedback and evaluation from the instructor trainer. This session is not meant to be conducted as a test but to polish skills and redirect as needed to ensure consistency with the current Red Cross Lifeguarding program. Each candidate must demonstrate as a primary rescuer as well as an assisting rescuer. To be successful, participants should be able to perform skills to the standard.
